Sustainable changes in sport are coming to life in coastal Taranaki

Rahotu Domain is getting a playground and multi-purpose courts for tennis, basketball, hockey and netball. A hoop will be installed thanks to the Basketball NZ’s Schick Neighbourhood Hoops scheme, a BBQ area is being installed and work is underway to have tennis gear available for community use. The planned new two-room changing and amenity block will be another important asset — made possible by the newly-formed Rahotu Sports Hub which includes the Coastal Rugby, Rahotu Tennis and Rahotu Netball clubs. Rahotu School and the South Taranaki District Council are also involved. Janet Fleming, funding officer for the project, says the courts and improved access to the domain will mean the school can host inter-school fixtures again and there are big plans for plenty of 3 x 3 basketball at the local hoop.

This progress tops off years of work, which more recently was supported by the Taranaki Facilities Consortium (TFC) – a group providing organisations and clubs with guidance and support to navigate sport, active recreation and play facility challenges. The TFC includes Taranaki’s four councils, NZCT, Toi Foundation, Sport Taranaki, Sport NZ, Venture Taranaki and the Taranaki Foundation. Going through this process gave the project the best chance of success and boosted future funding potential, says the TFC Independent Chair, Andrew Turner. The Rahotu project shows what can be achieved when groups work together and with the Consortium.

“What I love about this project is that it’s delivering for the sporting codes in a really joined up way, but it’s also delivering genuine benefit for the wider community as well." Discover how the Taranaki Facilities Consortium can help with your facility planning at www.tfc.net.nz
